Fairfield County School District acknowledges the South Carolina High School League’s decision to reclassify Fairfield Central High School to Class A for the 2026–2028 athletic seasons.

Class A now includes approximately 75 schools across South Carolina, an increase from previous years when the classification ranged from about 46 to 54 schools. This expansion, not a recent change in Fairfield Central’s enrollment, contributed to the reclassification. Without the expansion of schools in Class A, Fairfield Central would have remained classified as Class 2A.

Athletic classifications are based on student enrollment in grades 9–11 only and do not include 12th grade. As a result, classifications do not reflect the full student population or the comprehensive academic, athletic, and extracurricular experiences Fairfield Central provides.

Like many rural communities, Fairfield County has experienced a decline in school-age children over the past several years. Expanded school choice options, including charter schools and open enrollment, have also contributed to enrollment shifts at Fairfield Central and across the district.

Despite these changes, Fairfield Central remains strong in academics, athletics, and the arts. According to the most recent school report card, Fairfield Central meets and exceeds the criteria aligned with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. The district’s commitment to high expectations, student success, and a supportive learning environment remains unwavering.

Looking ahead, the district continues to partner with county leadership and community stakeholders on initiatives aimed at strengthening the county and attracting families, which will support enrollment growth over time.
